Mary Young
Founder, Know Your Midwife

Mary_Young_CROPPEDMary registered as a Comprehensive Nurse in 1980, practising in such fields as Intensive Care Paediatrics, Accident & Emergency, Medical and Renal, Obstetrics and Community Health. She was training Nursing Undergraduates at Auckland University of Technology in 1990 when she felt a calling back to community-centric primary care giving.

She followed this calling to the Torres Strait Islands in a general nursing role with Queensland Health’s Thursday Island Hospital; onwards to Mount Isa, deep in Queensland’s outback, as a surgical nurse at Mount Isa Hospital; then to Mount Isa Mines as an Occupational Health Nurse before serving as a relief nurse at a remote outback community clinic in collaboration with the Royal Flying Doctor Service of Australia.

In 1991 Mary returned to New Zealand as a maternity-ward nurse at the North Shore Public Hospital in Auckland. She became a registered midwife in 1994, having trained alongside independent midwives and General Practitioners in the community as well as in the hospital birthing-suite. She became a parent herself in 1996, when she gave birth to a gorgeous baby girl.

Mary helped launch a private midwifery practice in 1997, Maternity Associates, and for the next seven years helped birth an estimated 70 beautiful babies each year.

Mary joined the maternity team at the Nambour Selangor Private Hospital on Australia’s Sunshine Coast in 2004 where, as a midwife, she worked in the antenatal midwifery clinic and birthing suites as well as providing childbirth education and post natal care. Ever eager to expand her knowledge-base, and not wanting to be constrained by government-recognised programs, Mary has also trained as a HypnoBirthing practitioner with the American HypnoBirthing Institute.

Mary has now brought together two decades of professional experience in Maternity Care, Community Nursing and Healthcare Education in the creation of Know Your Midwife.
